Oahu, Hawaii 2017 Trip: Day 5 - Eating at Giovanni's Shrimp Truck, Beach Hopping in the North Shore and Snorkelling at Shark's Cove
This was our last full day in the North Shore area so we really wanted to make the most out of it. We started out the day by heading to Giovanni's Shrimp Truck. This was the most famous shrimp truck in the area and is very hyped up by many people. According to Yelp Giovanni's opens at 10:30 am, so we got there around 10:15. Since we were there so early, we actually got a great parking spot. FYI, parking here really sucks. Be prepared to have to walk further away if you come here in the afternoon.
While waiting for the shrimp truck to open, we decided to check out the macadamia nut stand that's right beside it. The lady graciously gave us samples of different flavours of the nuts. They were so good that we ended up buying 2 bags. The flavours we got were Da Dreamy Stuff and Snowconut balls which was our favourite flavour. The name of this stand was called 4 Da Family, I highly recommend trying out the nuts there. In our opinion, this company had the best macadamia nuts from our trip.
Finally Giovanni's opened, we were glad we got there early because the line was forming quite quickly. We decided to order the scampi and the lemon and butter shrimp from the truck. Each shrimp plate comes with rice as well.
The shrimp was pretty good, I definitely liked the scampi shrimp a bit more over the lemon butter. However I felt like the rice was really bad, it was really mushy and I hate mushy/wet rice. It may be a personal preference cause I like my rice on the harder side. Overall I feel like Giovanni's is worth a try if the line isn't too long but I feel like there are probably better shrimp trucks in the North Shore.
After lunch we started our day of beach hopping. To be honest I don't remember all the beaches we went to cause we didn't even know the names of some of them.
First beach we headed to was Laniakea Beach. We wanted to stop here because I thought we might be able to spot turtles on this beach. We didn't see any but we did lay on the beach and went in the water for a little bit. The waves were rough that day and it got a bit chilly. We left pretty quick but it's still a beautiful beach. It would be perfect during the spring and summer time
After Laniakea Beach, we wanted to go to Sunset Beach. However once we arrived, we quickly realized that there was erosion on the beach once we did a quick google search. So we decided we wanted to go to Shark's Cove instead. When we were attempting to head to Shark's Cove, we stop by a beach park by the cove. However the waves were even more rough there and the lifeguard told us we shouldn't go swimming there. After, we finally made it to Shark's Cove!
Shark's Cove was the first place I've ever snorkelled at. I had a great experience here and I highly recommend coming out here. Here is a list of tips I have if you plan to come here.
1) Parking can be difficult like anywhere on Oahu
2) The women's washroom was a disaster when I went. There was 2 stalls, one wasn't flushing and the other had no toilet paper. You can imagine how slow the line was moving and how gross the washrooms were. So I would bring back up Kleenex or toilet paper just in case. Just be warned that the washroom situation could be a disaster.
3) Shark's Cove has a lot of rocks. You have to wear swimming shoes or flip flops if you want to snorkel there. When walking down to the water, you also have to wear shoes. No joke, the rocks are very sharp. My boyfriend and I wore flip flops the whole and we still got scratched.
After all the activities, we were tired and hungry. There's no better way to wind down than to order pizza. We ordered a large pizza from Jerry's Pizza Mill in Waialua, which is the town we were staying at. The pizza there was really good, it was thin crust and it was pretty cheap. We paid I think around $22 USD for the pizza. Not bad for dinner for 2. I didn't take any photos of the pizza, we were way too hungry to remember.
That was our last full day in the North Shore, we had a great time here. If you plan to travel to Oahu, definitely stay here for a couple of days.
