Oahu, Hawaii 2017/2018 Trip: Day 10 - Last day of our trip, Eating at Helena's, Hiking the Manoa Falls Trail, spending the afternoon at the Ala Moana Centre and flying back home
This day was our last day in Hawaii but our flight was not until 11:30 PM. Therefore we pretty much had a whole day left. We checked out of our Airbnb in the morning and honestly if we had the budget I wished I had another night in our studio. It would be nice to have a shower before the flight but that meant paying for another night.
After checking out, we decided that we can't leave Hawaii without trying a Hawaiian meal. So we headed to Helena's Hawaiian Foods. Helena's has really good ratings on Yelp, Google and Tripadvisor so we figured it's probably a must try. The parking lot at Helena's is really tiny so we had a find street parking. There was a bit of line to get a table since this is a very popular restaurant. However the service was efficient and we got our food quickly. Since it was our first time trying Hawaiian Food, we wanted to try a bit of everything. We ordered a combo that consists of Kalua Pig, Pipikaula Short Ribs, Lomi Salmon and rice. In addition we also ordered chicken long rice, macaroni salad and Lau Lau (pork cooked and wrapped in a leaf). They also gave us Haupia (coconut pudding) as an complimentary dessert.
All the dishes were prepared very well, it was flavourful and the meat was tender. The only dish that we thought that was weird was the chicken long rice. It didn't taste bad, I think the texture was just off. Also if we had another day here in Hawaii, I think I would have bought a whole tray of Haupia. That dessert was so delicious! The price for this meal was not too expensive, we thought it was quite affordable. Also keep in mind that this restaurant is cash only.
After lunch we headed to the Manoa Falls Trail since I thought this would a easy hike before our flight tonight. Boy was I wrong. The trail was pretty easy and not too long but it was very slippery from the mud. I had almost slipped couple times myself and when we were heading down I saw a girl slipped and fell. My boyfriend and I both had mud on our legs and our shoes were covered in mud. We definitely had to quickly change and clean up after the hike. The scenery from the hike was pretty but I don't think this was the best hike we did this trip. If you have time and you don't want to do a long hike, this is not a bad option. I think it was slippery for us because it did rain a bit a couple days ago. So if it pouring out, do not attempt this hike cause I think it would be very dangerous. Also I think there are flood warnings out when it does rain. Also please note that if you plan on parking at the trail, you need to pay $5 cash. We saw some people park at the residential streets and walked to the trail.
After hike we decided to head to the Ala Moana Mall to get some gifts and do a bit of shopping to kill some time before we head to the airport. We also stumbled upon the Shirokiya Japan Village Walk which has so many any Japanese food vendors and there were $1 beers everywhere. We decided to eat there before we head to the airport. We ordered some ramen, gyoza and also got a dessert crepe to share. The food here was pretty good, if you are shopping at Ala Manoa, make sure to stop by here.
After dinner we headed to the airport and that marks the end of our trip. We had an amazing time here in Oahu, Hawaii. We definitely did not want to leave and can't wait to travel to another island in the future. I will be posting my overall thoughts, tips and a summary of our trip as well.
Thanks
